As we enter a new decade the new political leadership can chart a new direction for the commercial fishing industry. Improving governance, transparency and ethical leadership and prudent fiscal management is what is required to right size fisheries management in South Africa.

The recent Namibian example of political meddling and state enabled corruption is a good case study on how not to allocate rights. Initial indications are that under the current ministerial team South Africa will seek to limit political interference.
