The Phase 1 Social-Economic Impact Assessment System (SEIAS) for a few of the fishing sectors that are up for renewal in FRAP 2020/21, were published for public comment a few weeks ago. The sectors published were the hake deepsea; hake longline; demersal shark; and the small pelagic (sardine and anchovy). The fishing industry and it’s stakeholders were granted an extension to 10 June for comment. MYLES MINNAAR unpacks this topic, especially its relevance to the small pelagics sector.

Household Affordability and the Price of Fish
Once again, South Africa’s household affordability index does not list fish as a core food. The only protein that does appear is frozen chicken pieces. Fish is however on the list of foods in the basket which increased by 5% or more in March alone.
