Some examples are:

Fish played a vital role in the colonisation of the Cape. When in 1687, Simon van der Stel discovered False Bay teeming with fish that could provide the much needed food for the settlers and the company’s slaves, he established a base camp  at ‘Kalkhoven’ – as Kalk Bay was known at that time.

The authorities regarded the working fisher folk of Kalk Bay as a rough, loud-mouthed, violent and most troublesome bunch. However discrimination against them does not feature prominently in historical records. Boat crews were deemed the working class and identified racially and ethnically and also regarded as members of society’s lower class – very much similar to today.

It is recognised that the story of Kalk Bay evolved not only through the fishing industry but because a substantial proportion of its people exhibited a strong desire for cooperation, religious bonding and mutual goodwill. It was not the work of just one particular nationality or ethnicity. Nor was it merely about the sea. The community was rich in esteem, pride and the ability to have tackle the tragedies, obstacles and overwhelming odds thrown in their way.
