Cape Town Earmarks Billions for Water and Sanitation Projects

This month (July) the City of Cape Town has confirmed R5,39 billion has been allocated in its budget for water and sanitation capital projects and R19 billion for its operational budget for the 2026/27 financial year. This includes the sewer system and pump stations across the city, major upgrades and phased improvements to wastewater treatment works, rivers and waterways and investment in treating effluent. Given the ongoing concerns and criticisms about raw sewerage released into the oceans, this very overdue investment in water infrastructure is indeed good news. Thereafter, there will hopefully be ongoing and effective water quality monitoring like that which is happening in Saldanha Bay and Langebaan.
