Artisanal Fishers Mourn the Loss of Traditions, Government Sees Opportunities 

Heritage Day on 24 September is a reminder that tried and tested traditions should continue to be celebrated. But this is not the experience of some Western Cape traditional artisanal fishers, who like others along the coastline have been recategorised as small-scale fishers in terms of current fisheries legislation. They continue to bemoan the loss of their customary traditional practices and say they struggle to be heard. A different message was communicated by Deputy Minister, Narend Singh, who met with the Amakhosi and Izinduna small-scale fishing communities in Durban, KwaZulu Natal last week.
