Marine phosphate mining continues to feature high on the fishing industry radar. Namibia Marine Phosphates (NMP) in May won its court case that its marine mining environmental clearance be reinstated. This was on the basis that it was not given a fair hearing at a public appeal in late 2016 when the Minister for the Environment set the clearance aside, pending further assessment.
