When the Operation Phakisa initiative was first announced the commercial fishing industry was surprised to have been excluded. Instead aquaculture was identified as one of four growth areas prioritised to contribute to unlocking the economic potential of South Africa’s oceans. The increasing demand for fish products, an increasing global population, rising incomes of the middle class in developing countries, and more awareness of the dietary benefits offered, has contributed to a higher rate of growth of the sector than capture fisheries over the past decade. But as Andre Bok of Kingfish Enterprises will tell you, establishing a new aquaculture business takes time, money, knowledge, and patience. However, the pleasure of being able to feed people in the long term often outweighs the risks associated with any kind of farming.
