The shambolic state of South Africa’s ports has been a frequent topic in the news. Nonetheless, Transnet National Ports Authority says its needs more money. But the Ports Regulator has ruled that there should be no increase in weighted average port tariffs.
The Ports Regulator has refused Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) application to raise tariffs for the April 2024 to March 2025 year. This significant decision was not made lightly. There was considerable consultation with the industry at large and internal deliberation. The Regulator also took into consideration “the economic environment within which port users, importers and exporters find themselves in”.
