Fishing Boat Donated to Groenvlei Carp Project

The CapeNature Groenvlei Carp Project has received a new fishing boat from the Oceana Group which will help to support the successful feeding scheme in the Southern Cape and Karoo.

The Oceana Group, Isuzu South Africa and Gift of the Givers have partnered with CapeNature to support the Groenvlei Carp Project which was first initiated in 2018 by Johnny Snyman and his non-profit organisation Invasive Fish Species Management.

Initially the intention was to remove the invasive carp from the Groenvlei and use it for organic compost, but instead the fish are being used to feed communities via soup kitchens.

To date more than 320000 people throughout the Southern Cape have benefited from the carp donations which are harvested to be fit for consumption. In the last year alone some 9700kg of carp have been removed from Groenvlei and the project has grown to include other water bodies managed by the South African National Parks (SANParks).

The fishing vessel donated by the Oceana Group was gifted last week at an event held in Wilderness. Oceana has previous sponsored a refrigerated trailer used for the distribution of the carp.
