The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) along with the South African Council of Churches (SACC), Producer Responsibility Organisations (PRO) and municipalities will be launching a community waste awareness event at the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa located in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, this weekend.
The “Separate. Recycle. Care. Faith in Action” initiative encourages churches to adopt waste separation and recycling. This begins with three churches in each province with possible expansion depending on lessons learnt.
This initiative aims at raising awareness amongst church leadership, members and community members on separating waste at source, recycling and reduction of landfill waste. The project will be educating the community about the value chain of recycling, link churches to the recyclers and facilitate material collection – thus offering job creation opportunities both in formal and informal recycling sectors.
The participating Producer Responsibility Organisations will provide the training, recycling bins and connections to the nearest recycling company. The recyclers will collect the materials from the churches and compensate the latter on basis of the weight of collected material. Faith-based groups are well suited to mobilise the community to change their behaviours.
This partnership will assist in the national efforts to strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility, increase waste diversion from landfills, recycling and keeping South Africa clean. It also creates an opportunity for communities to participate in the circular economy.
Church leaders, congregations and communities are invited to join hands in achieving the above objective.
