The fishing year 2016 was dominated by fishing right allocations. Siphokazi Ndudane was formally appointed Fisheries DDG after two years in the job and her “to do” list included gearing the Fisheries branch up for the allocation of rights across nine important fisheries (and fish processing establishments) in 2015/2016 as well as resolving the administrative nightmare of the failed FRAP 2013.

The Vision Fishing Primary Cooperative and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment have told the Western Cape High Court that the South African Squid Industry Management Association (SASMIA) representing its members is not “entitled” to retain a monopoly on the global chokka squid (Loligo reynaudii) resource allocation. No News Yet but Fishing Vessel Incident Rate Raises Eyebrows
There is growing concern about the increase in incidents involving fishing vessels and ships. Fact is though that a lot of the fishing vessels, including the latest casualty, MFV Lepanto, are very old. The search for the missing 11 crew members has yielded no results so far other than some debris found.
UPDATE. Trawler sinks, 11 Crew Missing
Apart from debris found floating at sea by a fishing vessel assisting with a search and rescue operation in the Atlantic Ocean early this morning, there is still no sign of the 11 crew members of the sunken FV Lepanto, reports the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). The search has now gone airborne.
