There is a hotch potch of issues facing the commercial and small-scale fisheries in 2021. Jeremy Marillier, CEO Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Institute / UN FAO partner, has the inside track and provides this sneak preview of what you can expect.

As we move from a position of economic relief to economic recovery, the COVID-19 impact will be felt in some sectors of the fishing industry into 2021. Asian markets for abalone and west coast rock lobster will partially open with certain trade protocols. The added intention of 50/50 splitting the abalone to accommodate the small-scale sector makes for interesting times.

The Deputy Minister when appointed made bold statements about sorting the mess in fisheries administration instructed by the President. To date there has been little progress on addressing the challenges facing the fisheries branch.
