A year ago, in June 2021, South Africa’s commercial squid sector heard that it would be losing 15% of available squid effort to the small-scale fishing sector. Furthermore that this percentage could be increased to up to 25% in the future. While this looks good on paper, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has not responded to any requests for information, nor has it complied with legislation. This has forced the South African Squid Management Industry Association (SASMIA) to ask the Western Cape High Court to review the decision.
