South Africa's Marine Protected Areas. The target is to increase the country's protected estate by 0.5% per annum and achieve about 28% of land and sea under protection by 2036.

The 17th Southern African Marine Science Symposium is currently underway in Durban and there is a very full programme to get through this week. The Minister was there and had something to say about ocean-based seismic surveys…

The event is being hosted by the University of KwaZulu Natal and the KZN Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence on behalf of SANCOR (the South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research).

The theme is “Marine Science for the Future South Africa.”
