Namibia Horse Mackerel. The 200m Isobar Zone Stays

Horse mackerel vessels of this size have been a common sight alongside the quay at port of Walvis Bay. Back in 2013 the Dutch super trawler Dirk Diederik was at the centre of a controversy after the vessel was granted the right to catch a 10000 ton horse mackerel quota for a newcomer right holder in the mid water trawl sector. The Namibian government has turned down requests from the Wet Landed Horse Mackerel Association (WLHMA) to permit fishing in the 200m isobar zone. It says to do so – even for a short period – would set a precedent.
