The 2023/2024 West Coast Rock Lobster Season Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and Applied Effort (TAE) has been announced. Recreational fishers have also been granted 12 fishing days. The TAC for the 2023/2024 season has been reduced by 16.43% from the previous fishing season.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) says in determining the TAC and TAE for the 2023/24 West Coast Rock Lobster season it had to consider the WWF judgement (Case No 11478/18) in the Cape High Court. It also says it has used the best available science and information in resource asessment and the precautionary principle has been observed.

“The harvesting of West Coast Rock Lobster at levels which do not facilitate growth of the resource is contrary to the judgement and constitutes a threat of serious and irreversible environmental damage. In projecting how resource abundance would be influenced by reductions in TAC and limitation of the TAE, a TAC of 460 tons for the 2023/2024 season has been determined,” says the DFFE.
