New Freshwater Fish Species for Science

The Goukou galaxias (Galaxias sp. nov. ‘goukou’) is currently being described as a new freshwater species for science. South Africa currently has only one valid species of Galaxias, G. zebratus, but the study conducted by Prof Chakona et al. (2013) has shown that there are more than 10 species that were included into this one species. Source: SAIAB

Did you know, researchers from the National Research Foundation’s South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) are in the process of describing the freshwater Goukou galaxias as a new fish species for science.
