The South African government is advancing plans for 5200MW of new nuclear generation capacity and wants to build a nuclear power plant at Thyspunt between Oyster Bay and Cape St Francis in the Eastern Cape. This is once again raising alarm among residents of the surrounding communities of Humansdorp, St Francis and Jeffreys Bay and is especially concerning to the local squid fishing industry.

This weekend the communities have an opportunity to voice concerns at a Speak Out in Jeffrey’s Bay hosted by the charity, Thyspunt Alliance, in conjunction with Earthlife Africa Johannesburg. On the agenda are five issues communities keep raising: safety, cost, water, tourism and culture.

Saturday 11 July 2026

Newton Hall, Jeffreys Bay

2pm – 5pm

If you cannot be there in person you can livestream the event on Facebook – follow @earthlifeafricajohannesburg to tune in.
