South Africa Renews Seabird Plan of Action

Bird scaring lines (or tori lines as they are referred to), have been used by fishing vessels to monitor seabird bycatch. But now electronic monitoring devices are also being used.

South Africa has renewed its commitment to reducing incidental seabird mortality and strengthening monitoring, reporting and adaptive management.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has adopted the National Plan of Action II for the Conservation and Management of Seabirds in South African Fisheries (NPOA Seabirds II), setting the country’s strategy for 2026–2030 to further reduce incidental seabird mortality and strengthen monitoring, reporting and adaptive management.
