Boosting growth opportunities in the South African manufacturing sector through localisation of design of a product whether it is relevant to manufacturing, maintenance or repairs, is a topic that has been discussed for years across different platforms. But massive investment and a change in mindset would be required to bring this about generally.
Now South Africa’s Department of Trade & Industry’s Industry Policy Unit has for the first time put it all on paper, starting with the marine industry. A study on Naval Design, titled: “Vessel Design, A Determinant Component in the Value Chain of the Marine Manufacturing”, has been completed.
The findings and recommendations have been shared with mostly naval designers and vessel manufacturers, procuring entities and policymakers and other interested parties.
