A report which forms part of the environment impact assessment process for the proposed uShaka Pier extension project on the Durban beachfront, has revealed all sorts of damaging findings about the state of Vetchās Pier and reef. But almost a year since its publication the eThekwini Municipality and Transnet have still not acted on the recommendations and the Save Vetchās Association has now run out of patience.
The Ethekwini Municipality which runs the city of Durban is failing in its duty of care as well as the draft maintenance management plan for the sand pumping on the beachfront. So much so that the Save Vetch Association has elevated its concerns and has written to the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy, to ask her to investigate the compliance issues.
