The global community of recreational fisheries scientists, policymakers, and conservation leaders will soon gather in South Africa for the 11th World Recreational Fishing Conference (WRFC 11) – the first time this event will be hosted on the African continent.

The event takes place at Mpekweni Beach Resort in the Eastern Cape from 22 to 26 February 2026, bringing together leading researchers, practitioners, and institutions from around the world to exchange knowledge, share data, and explore the future of sustainable recreational fisheries under the theme: “Sharing Global Experiences to Promote Resilient Recreational Fisheries.”

Held every three years, the WRFC is the world’s preeminent platform for recreational fishing science and policy dialogue. The 2026 edition aims to strengthen global research partnerships, deepen understanding of socio-ecological systems, and promote resilience in fisheries management amid accelerating environmental and social change.

  • Confirmed keynote speakers include:
  • Dr Judy Mann-Lang (South Africa) – Executive: Strategic Projects, Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation
  • Dr Nelly Isigi Kadagi (Kenya/USA) – Director, Education for Nature Program, World Wildlife Fund (WWF-USA)
  • Dr Valerio Sbragaglia (Italy) – Marine Ecologist and Behavioural Fisheries Scientist
  • Prof. Steven J. Cooke (Canada) – Professor of Applied Fish Ecology, Carleton University
  • These thought leaders will explore critical topics such as conservation ethics, catch-and-release science, data innovation, the behavioural ecology of fish, and the social dimensions of recreational fishing.

The conference programme features plenary sessions, scientific presentations, poster exhibitions, and capacity-building workshops, complemented by several interactive networking events.

A Milestone for Africa and Global Science

“Hosting WRFC 11 in South Africa is both a scientific milestone and an opportunity to amplify African perspectives in global fisheries research,” says Dr Alexander Winkler.

“The continent is experiencing rapid growth in recreational fishing, and this platform will advance regional data collection, capacity development, and policy coherence”.

The conference convenes every three years, rotating globally to connect diverse regions and disciplines. The last edition took place in Australia. You can follow WRFC 11 online at www.wrfc11.com or info@wrfc11.com
